PURGATORY
Written By
Alfie Curnow, Brandon Johnson & Kieran McNeill
January 2018
FADE IN:
Sometime in the year 2018, Mysterious room filled with white light - Purgatory. Confined space. Two figures sitting opposite each other. Desk between one another. One door in the Room. Label illegible. CLOCK TICKING can be heard but not seen.
Confused and looking around. Harvey Identifies that besides the DESK and the CHAIRS they were sitting on, no other objects were insight. Now worried and uncertain he begins to speak.
HARVEY
Wha- Where Am I? Who are you?
GATEKEEPER
Welcome to Purgatory! Who I am is none of your concern, Just know that I am your only way out of this place.
HARVEY
Purgatory? Why am I here?
Purgatory? What is Purgatory? What am I doing here?
GATEKEEPER
Mr. Webber, please calm down. Prior to meeting you, I heard you were going to be a tough individual. It seems so far my evaluation on you was correct. Now, while you are required to be here.If you calm down I can begin answering any questions you may have for me. I’ll start with what this place is if that is helpful?
HARVEY
Fine. Just hurry up. I left the chicken in the oven cooking for the kids, I’ll need to get back to them soon.
GATEKEEPER
(PLANTS a case file labeled HARVEY WEBBER onto the desk)
I’m afraid we know you never had children Mr Webber and we also know everything there is to know about you so nothing like that will work on us.
We will be as short or as long as it takes you to admit to your many crimes.
HARVEY
(Now WORRIED and CONCERNED)
If you have all this on me then why should I admit to anything?
GATEKEEPER
I may have this information on you but carefully placed red tape is preventing us from exonerating you until you have admitted to every crime and sin that was committed whilst you were alive.
HARVEY
Whatever.
(Looks away from the Gatekeeper and mumbles something)
GATEKEEPER
(Becoming IMPATIENT)
My impatience is growing. Mr Webber, you’ve been nothing but uncooperative so far, I’ve had to calm you down, expose for your lies and now this. I suggest if you know what’s good for you and your afterlife state you’ll buck up your ideas and remember who’s in charge here.
HARVEY
(Mumbling)
Fine what do you want to know?
GATEKEEPER
Nothing complex. Just confess your sins.
HARVEY
Okay. Well this was a long time ago. So do keep that in mind.
GATEKEEPER
I know.
HARVEY
When I was 15, I was part of a gang. We would pass the time by doing all sorts of stuff, from snorting gummy bears to Illegal dog breeding. Sometimes we would even break into people's homes in attempt to make a quick buck.
GATEKEEPER
Snorting gumm-.. Never mind. Now, Mr Webber, tell me more about your burglary ordeals. You act like you burgled quite a few different houses but we both know it was only one. Don’t we?
HARVEY
Why do you even care?!
GATEKEEPER
Touched a nerve I see?
HARVEY
It was a couple of years ago, In order to get into the gang I had to do complete some sort of initiation.. The one way to prove myself worthy was to rob that house.
GATEKEEPER
But something went terribly wrong, didn’t it?
HARVEY
(Now WORRIED and TREMBLING and stutters trying to speak but has no words)
GATEKEEPER
Does the name, Blackburn ring any bells?
HARVEY
(still STUTTERING and CLENCHES his fist)
Black...burn?
GATEKEEPER
Mhm, the Blackburns. Maximillion Blackburn your local MP owned the house that you burgled but you already know that. Pretty successful guy wouldn’t you say? A ton of money, a big house and… a… Son.
HARVEY
(Slams his clenched fist onto the table)
You Bastard…
GATEKEEPER
Language Mr Webber. Swearing is also a Sin, you wouldn’t want that to go on your list of sins alongside the Blackburn incident, would you?
HARVEY
Whatever.
GATEKEEPER
Now! Mr Webber! Tell me what happened in that house!
HARVEY
I never meant for it to turn out this way. It was meant to be a quick job, in and out. Nothing more.
GATEKEEPER
But it didn’t turn out that way, did it?
HARVEY
I know…we was so confident that everything was going to be fine, we planned out everything. We were prepared for every possible situation.
GATEKEEPER
But what happened?
HARVEY
We didn’t plan for him to be there.
GATEKEEPER
He got in the way didn’t he?
HARVEY
He was the cause of all of this, my life was ruined because of him.
GATEKEEPER
Entering the Blackburn’s house, what could you see?
Narration to come back to
GATEKEEPER
So as you left the house you made eye contact with the Blackburn's son?
HARVEY
Yes. It was the adrenaline. I could hear his father's car arriving back home and I didn’t have long to make a decision.
GATEKEEPER
It wasn’t just eye contact you gave him was it? You took the boy
HARVEY
He had seen my face. I couldn’t risk it. But after taking him I had no idea what to do with him.
GATEKEEPER
What happened to him?
HARVEY
He was being too loud, he needed to be taken care of. His father was in the driveway, we needed to get out of there.
GATEKEEPER
To where?
HARVEY
Anywhere, just away from that dreaded house. He was kicking and screaming and punching me. God, I couldn’t wait to shut him up.
GATEKEEPER
That’s when it happened, the action that determined your fate, the reason why you’re here!
HARVEY
It was out of impulse. It was instinct.
… I took his life.
GATEKEEPER
*slow clapping* That wasn’t so hard now was it? But, how did you end up here?
-Silence from Harvey-
Mr Webber, one can only be summoned to Purgatory once they die.
HARVEY
It felt like the right thing to do. The only way out. My life was ruined. My life wasn’t worth living. There was only one thing left to do.
GATEKEEPER
Your final sin.
SCENE CHANGES TO FLASH BACK
Scene cuts to showing back door of house unlocked and slightly open
Harvey looks around the house to see if anyone is home, looking through windows and moving very cautiously
Rear mid shot following Harvey as he goes through the door and looks around the house to see if anyone is home, looking through windows and moving very cautiously
Camera then takes close up shots of pictures scattered around the house to show us his victims, then he goes into the bedrooms to look for a safe, which may include money or jewellery.
Once he has gathered enough loot he takes his leave and makes eye contact with the Blackburn’s child who is standing at the top of the staircase.
Noise of car coming into the driveway which is suggested to be the Father. Harvey drops the loot, runs up the stairs and manhandles the child dragging him down the stairs then slinging him over his shoulder and leaves the loot behind taking the child out of the backdoor.
Harvey proceeds to lower the child to shoulder to shoulder with his arm around the kid, running through neighbour’s gardens while the child proceeds to keep kicking and punching and screaming out loud. Childs lucky punch lets Harvey’s grip loosen giving the child a brief moment to escape from him. Harvey rugby tackles the child to the ground to show dominance and capture the kid once more.
The two come across an empty garden with a treehouse which Harvey leads the resistant kid to. Forcefully being pushed by Harvey towards the treehouse. The two enter the treehouse after another small conflict and Harvey proceeds to murder the child with a knife Harvey had on him. Harvey walks out of the treehouse alone, drops the knife and wipes a smear of blood off of his face.
